About Us

What is Borak-Borak Floorball?

Borak-Borak Floorball (BBF) was initiated by a group of three avid floorballers from Penang, Malaysia. The interest sparked off due to a certain passion for the sport and a keen desire to share that passion to others. With that, came the idea of 'borak-borak'.

What does the term "Borak-Borak" actually mean?

"Borak-borak" is a Malaysian lingo that equates to the English word "chit-chat". The phrase is commonly used and has somewhat the power to identify one's identity as a Malaysian. BBF is passionate to 'chit-chat' about the happenings and events of floorball, first in Penang and then the other parts of Malaysia. With that in mind, Borak-Borak Floorball came into existence.

Who are we?

BBF comprises mainly of three suspects under the pseudonyms of Jose, Bendy and Spritzer. However, BBF has also taken in hired-for-free reporters in their effort to cover as many grounds as possible.

NOTE: BBF is not an official website to any organization or governing body. We are merely a group of passionate floorballers who seek to share this passion to others. We strive to be courteous, neutral and honest in our opinions, thoughts, reviews and analyses.

Our vision?

BBF sought to 'talk big' and 'talk much' about floorball. We hope to represent the floorball community in Penang as well as the nation, Malaysia, in the bigger picture. We want to be a voice for floorball in the present and future generation, a voice to be heard not for recognition but for the ultimate growth and development of floorball in Malaysia.

Penalty leaders:

Best player:
Kerry Mahoney was by far the best player for Dalat Falcons. With a new goalie in goal for Dalat Falcons, the defence had to be solid in order for them to be contenders for the Division 2 crown. And that was what they got with Kerry.

Kerry, who had ice hockey background, proved to be a force to be reckoned as he was outstanding in defence together with his defensive partner Brian. The veteran ‘twin towers’ strong physique were rarely challenge and proved to be a stumbling block for attackers. Though they lack in speed and often got outrun, they make it up with a good anticipation and positioning, limiting the damage.

Not only did Kerry contributed in defence, he was also hugely involved in the Falcons resurgence late in the league, chipping in goals and assist, making him the complete defender. Though age may be catching up, he doesn't seemed to be bothered about it. His continuous effort in each game to make good passes, good runs, good blocks and yes, even good shots made him a giant in Falcons' defensive line-up.

Deservingly, he won secured himself a position in the Division 2 All-Star team. Then again, it was already predicted and he was an obvious choice anyway. He definitely played a pivotal role in Dalat's outing this year.

The question however is, will we be seeing more of him next year? :)

Dalat will definitely be praying to heaven that he will.

Borak says:
Team Dalat 2009 was thought to be a super team like their previous campaign but when the team roster unveiled in their opening match, it proved other wise.

They still look strong with the likes of Drew and the Reagan brothers up front together with Kerry and Brian at the back, but the overall squad depth was lacking. The main concern was a new goalie between the post whose floorball experience was near non-existence, spelling trouble as goalies are always known to be the foundation of any good team.

They did started the season with a easy 7-2 win over Frontliners 300. But the conceding 2 goals was a sign of uneasiness behind. They were then beaten soundly by their rivals, and eventual champions Phoenix. The misfiring forwards proved to be their downfall as even Drew, their ultimate weapon was out of sorts.

Further misfortune struck as Falcons conceded a walkover against Bullets due to unavoidable school events, sinking them to the bottom 3, a rare sight. This was a big blow to Dalat Falcons as were favourites to beat Contact Bullets, influencing the rankings.

Falcons did however bounce back in their finally two matches, both in convincing fashion. Drew and co. somehow rediscovered their long lost scoring touch, banging in goals like rain drops. Falcons promising young star, Reagan joined in for the show as well, chipping in some.

To sum up Falcons campaign, they had actually quite a good team but somehow they failed to hit the stride early on and the inexperience goalie didn't help much either. Adding on the walkover, it was combination that spells disaster. However, they continued to fought hard in the latter periods and still managed to clinch 3rd on the final match day, showing great determination and spirit.

It was a mysterious roller coaster like campaign by the Falcons with unforeseen events, unpredictable team rosters and unexpected performance. Hopefully it will be smoother next time around.

Player Rating: Firebrands vs Dalat Falcons

5 = world class
4 = superb
3 = good
2 = ok ok
1 = bad

Firebrands:
Gk:
Bryan Koh 3
There was just nothing the keeper could have done to halt Falcons' goal scoring run. All he could muster was to keep out as many others as possible, which he did. Every save was match by a loud cheer from the Firebrands contingent. The sole positive that Firebrands could comfort themselves with on the night of a 10 goal trashing.

Defenders:
Alex Loh 2
The test was beyond the Captain's capacity. Tried hard but failed.

Andrew Chan 2

Ong Zi Hoong 2

Jesher Lim (Didn't play enough to be rated)

Attackers:
James Tan 2

Daniel Tan 2
A quiet night for the forward as he was left alone up front trying to snatch a goal or two. Managed to grab one but when the big guys was back, he was out muscled and barely threatened.

Chan Per Yue 2

Keeran (Didn't play enough to be rated)

Marc Tong (Didn't play enough to be rated)

Joshua Tong (Didn't play enough to be rated)

Isaac Chew (Didn't play enough to be rated)

Dalat Falcons:
Gk:
Daniel Kim 2
A sheer spectator. Had maybe about 2 -3 shots to save and thats about it.

Defenders:
Kerry Mahoney 4
The catalyst of Falcons' win for the night. Came in late but with great influenced. Directly involved with all the 4 goals scored in the first half. Was solid as usual at the back, giving Daniel Tan almost no chance to take a shot on goal.

Brain Weidermann 2

Kyle Ladner 2

Jared Willians 2

Attackers:
Drew Steiert 3
The Captain finally back to his old self. Continued his scoring run with 4 goals, his second hattrick for the campaign and tipped off Adrian on the scoring charts.

Andy Goh 2
The boy keeps getting better and better, once again supplier Drew with his passes. Keep it up.

Reagan Mahoney 3
A very talented boy for his age with pretty good techniques and a willing runner. A star poacher for the future.

Riley Mahoney 2
Much faster and fancier in his dribblings but a bit too much. Often loses the ball trying to go pass every defender. Faster released on the final ball would be nice.

Jason Kimball 2

Michelle Prestidge 2

Bench Penalties:
Firebrands 2mins x 3
Dalat Falcons 2mins x 1

Finally, PFL 2009 Div 2 is coming to a close and what better way to officially end the league with a medal deciding game - Firebrands versus Dalat Falcons.

Firebrands who just recorded their first points against 300 are now looking on to the possibility of striking another few more points before the league ends. Falcons, on the other hand, finally seems to be coming ba9ck on track after some early struggles. Although it may be all too late now, still, it would be nice to end their campaign with a bang.

However, moments before the face-off, a glance at the Falcons' bench, one might think that the night may be leaning towards Firebrands' way after all as Falcons were forced to start the game with only one line, the rest of the squad went missing due to some school event which was held around the same time.

To the contrary, it was a night not to remember for the Firebrands, and it all started with a bench penalty for their top scorer, Daniel Tan. The forward was fouled for a lying play and within seconds, Falcons' Captain, Drew opened the scoring when Andy Goh cross past the defenders and found Drew whose simple tap in at point blank made it a 1-0 lead.
No chance for Bryan to react.

With that goal, the game kick started with more "omph" as both teams began exchanging blows.

Drew came close with a shot that was somehow instinctively (or accidentally) saved by the keeper's helmet. Firebrands surviving the scare got their live line when Andrew's mad man run up front force the defender into an error. The defender who was way out of position then fed Daniel Tan, unleashing an unstoppable shot from the side into Daniel Kim's goal.

1-1.
All square.

The game is back on, but Falcons were the dominant one and with their regulars back in the squad after a brief mysterious disappearance, Firebrands hope dimmed.

And it was one of the late comers, the so ever dependable rearguard, Kerry Mahoney that contributed their second. The referee awarded Falcons a free hit just outside the crease which Kerry, laid a pass to Drew, converted it via a first timer. Firebrands defender was slow in charging out to close down the shot, giving Drew a clear clean shot.

1-2.

Falcon's continue to dominate in possession, launching waves of attack onto Firebrands. Alex and co. were struggling to cope with Falcon's pacey forwards who danced around their half. They were lucky not to concede as the forwards were wasteful in their shots. However, can't say the same when it comes to free hit as Falcons made it count not once, but twice to score against Firebrands.

Two were scored by Falcons in quick succession. The first was an unforturnate one from a corner taken by Kerry. The goalie, for an interception attempt or whatsoever other reasons, stuck his foot out and deflected Kerry's hard corner cross and into his own net.
A goal out of no where!

Kerry was again the culprit from the second set piece. He was quick to react when the referee awarded Falcons another free hit outside the crease for an incorrect kick. This time, seeing the gap, he powered a direct shot straight into the net.

1-4.

Well, as usual, bad luck continued to follow. The unlucky individual this time was James Tan. The centre was found guilty for heading an incoming ball. The referees had no other choice but to sent him off for a bench penalty. Falcons took full advantage of it and added the fifth to the scoreline via a father (Kerry)-son combo, Reagan being on the score sheet.

1-5.

Firebrands sufferred a huge blow by the ferocious Falcons, needing all the inspiration coach Jason could give them during the break.

Falcons with a healthy lead, wasn't about to rest their laurels after the break. They continue to press on against an uninspired Firebrands who have lost all their battling aura.

Captain Drew, who was playing all out as if a redemption for all the mishaps and lost time for the walkover, was at his peak scoring form. 5 minutes into the second half, the captain scored his second hattrick of the league, taking his points to 8, tying with Adrian.

1-6.
6 for Falcons, 3 for Drew.

The goals just wouldn't stop flowing in for Firebrands and there was no stopping Michelle Pristidge's goal. It was a beauty considering the makeshift forward had almost no angle but the shot forced it's way pass Bryan's head and into the net.

1-7.

Firebrands had a rare breather when Jason Kimball was penalised for incorrect distance. The foul lifted Firebrands off the pressure and gave them a few chances for a fight back. However, it was still Falcons in control being the more penatrative with their runs and shot.

Lady Luck seems to enjoy torturing poor Firebrands as the goal rush continues. This time, it was Firebrands' Capt who gets himself on the wrong side of the score sheet. The defender who was un-pressured at the corner, somehow made an awkward clearance straight down the middle, which to Bryan's horror, deflected into his own net.

1-8. 2 OGs, What a miserable night for the goalie.

By then, Firebrands seems to gave in, the coach decided to send on the untried newbies for a test of competitive Floorball. An effort that backfired as Isaac Chew tasted his first bench penalty for incorrect distance.

The move made Firebrands even more vulnerable and Reagan, not planning to hold back, waltz around in the Firebrands half before deciding to take a ride behind the goal and before Bryan could react, Reagan curled in a cheeky low ball from behind.

1-9.

Drew decided to add somemore, another dip of icing on the cake, converting his 8th goal in the campaign, once again from Andy, leapfrogging him above Adrian in the point ladder.

Final score, 1-10.

It wasn't an easy fight for Firebrands at all especially with Falcons' escalating performance. However, it was very pleasant to see a group of new floorballers strutting out and giving their best in the game. Bravo to team Firebrands! Keep up the spirit! :)
There's always next year!

Firebrands:
Firebrands started off with a trashing, improved and fate decided they should end their first ever outing with another trashing.

Harsh stuff.

It was a night they wouldn't want to remember as everything seems to be against them. Nevertheless they kept going and going until finally giving in final moments before the final whistle.

Falcons who were on the forms of their lives was just too hot for them to handle. They were strong, fast and organised, leaving only their shadows for Firebrands to chase.

An encouraging effort for the first timers, keep it up and hope to see more of them in the future.

MoM:
The brighter side of this match was the heroic perforamance of the goalie Bryan Koh.

The goalie has again and again impressed everyone with his agility and goalkeeping techniques, keeping out shots with every possible means but was helpless in conceding 10 by a combination of bad luck and beginers' defending.

The boy, has huge potential. Keep it up.

Dalat Falcons:
A flawless performance by the Falcons, the only setback is that it came too late.

This was the kind of performance that the panel expected to see when they tipped Falcons to be the league champions. Falcons, combine with their athleticism and expericience dominated throughout the match, restricting Firebrands with only a handful of chances.

Their late revival cost them the league title, but they still did enough to secure them a bronze medal.

Drew, who was is such bad from at the start just couldn't stop scoring in his last 2 matches, and with tat, he is once again crowned PFL Div 2 point leader for the second year running. Merely a point over Adrian or Phoenix.

MoM:
It is a tough pick between Drew or Kerry.

Drew might have scored 4 and defended his point leader title, but it was Kerry who came in and influenced the match.

The defender has been one of the most consistent performers in the league and although he came in late for the game, he singlehandedly destroy Firebrands in the first half.

First the assist for Drew then the own goal which he was directly involved, continued with his free hit goal before adding another assist for his son.

An instrumental performance by the veteran defender who had once again proved why he is one of the best defenders in Div 2.

Match Preview: The Final Lap

Firebrands vs Dalat Falcons

Date: 17th March 2009 (Tuesday)
Face-off Time: 7.45pm
Venue: Dalat International School

What a finale.

15 matches over the span of two months have indeed stirred up the Floorball scene in Penang.
From the Bullets trashing on Firebrands,
to the surprise 300 win over Bullets,
then the walk over by Falcons,
to the battling draw by Firebrands.
Dramatic and flamboyant sum up the excitement and unpredictability of the league, providing much entertainment and a plethora of emotions.

The final match sees Firebrands versus Dalat Falcons with both teams on its own hidden agenda.
Firebrands, although bottom in the league, is arguably the most improved team as they played successive matches after another. This is evident as they succeeded in snatching away 300's crucial point, derailing them from the medal course. This has always been the case with the underdogs, they come in with no experience, no expectation and above all, no fear!
That's the scary part.
Can they repeat the same feat against Falcons?

Ironically, thanks to their to-be opponent, Falcon's medal hopes have been reignited when Firebrands denied 300 a win, and with 300 losing to Phoenix in their final game, Falcon's fate is in their own hands. They merely need a draw which we'll see them tie on 5 points together with 300 but they will soar ahead of 300 due to their win against them.

As the saying goes, the enemy of my enemy is my friend, 300 might hold grudge against Firebrands for the draw, but they would be rooting for them to beat Falcons so they can get the glory. On the other hand, Griffins would be hoping Falcons to win so that they would not have to see themselves in the bottom.

Confusing and complex it is but this is all coming to an end.
So, let us savor the final moments of PFL 2009 Division 2,
say good bye,
and say hello again in more, upcoming tourney's!

There will be a closing ceremony after the final match tonight.
So to all supporters, be sure to be there!
Let's cheer em' on for the last lap!

Key Player:
Firebrands:
Bryan Koh has been one of the main pillars of team Firebrands throughout the league, although he doesn't get the glory of scoring goals like Daniel, but his heroic ball stopping is well acknowledge by the crowd and his peers.

He might have conceded the most, but without him, the figures might have been doubled. Therefore, against Falcons who would be blasting all around the court, he'll be the last line of defense, if the balls manage to penetrated James, Alex and Andrew.

With Daniel who tends to sneak around up front, the keeper's throw would proved to be Firebrands deadlest weapon in the game to initiate counters. Something 300 who be praying hard for.

Dalat Falcons:
Drew Steiret with his scoring touch back looks to be raring to go. He is now 5 points in the point ladder and must be counting how many goals and/ or assist he need, to top the charts again.

With his limitless stamina, well built physique, cheeky shots, and battling spirits, scoring seems inevitable. He would be too hot for Firebrands to handle and therefore he has so only himself to stop him from getting on the score sheet.

Predictions:
Bendy:
Interesting finale. The medals and last place will have to be decided in the final match of the day. Anxiety on both ends.

Kudos to Firebrands for pushing the league so far, without their battling displays to create surprising results, it would have been boring.

Based on facts and (self-proclaimed) professional analysis, it would be hard to not pick Falcons for the win. They are big, they are strong and they are fast, it would be near impossible to stop them. However, as a spectator, it is even harder to neglect the urge for surprises. Falcons inexperience keeper against poacher Daniel Tan; Bryan on from with Drew off form. Anything could happen.

All things go well, still, a comfortable win and bronze for Falcons.

Jose
This is Firebrands last chance to pull off an upset against the mighty Falcons as PFL Division 2 comes to a close. Firebrands have been growing and growing in confidence as the league progress. From losing 8-0 in their first game to drawing 2-2 with Frontliners 300, this team deserves some respect!

If Dalat would to go into this game thinking that the bronze is already theirs, then they are seriously wrong. This game is going to be a neck to neck battle, but i still see Dalat walking off winners by 2 goals. The logic behind this is simply because Dalat has more options upfront when compared to Firebrands who get most of their goals from their center, Daniel Tan. Without any doubt, Dalat for bronze.

Spritzer:
I think to all eyes, it's an obvious win for Dalat. Although Firebrands have shown much improvement, I doubt they have the edge to defeat Dalat in the match. Dalat themselves have been improving as well, especially their key forward, Drew. Having said that, with Firebrands recent stunt for pulling off an uncalled-for scoreline against 300, it's also hard to tell what they are actually up to against Falcons.

It will be a tough fight for Firebrands if they want to emerge out as winners. Dalat's defensive system and players are solid at the back, their forwards are like those energizer bunnies and their centres are commanding. An easy win for Dalat.

Player Rating: Dalat Falcons vs Ztec Griffins

5 = world class
4 = superb
3 = good
2 = ok ok
1 = bad

Dalat Falcons:
Gk:
Daniel Kim 2
A carefree day for the keeper other than the two goals. Defenders were solid through out and Griffins rarely threaten after the interval.

Defenders:
Kerry Mahoney 3
Another commanding display by the defender. The Griffins rarely find their way pass his towering presences.

Brian Weidemann 2
Kerry's partner in crime. Both look almost flawless when teamed together.

Jarad Williams 2
A new face at the back. A rather encouraging performance from the makeshift forward. Contributed more in attack than in defense with his forays forward and long shots from the back.

Attackers:
Drew Steiret 4
Instrumental in Falcons victory. He single-handedly brought the Falcons back and towards victory with his determination, superior fitness and plus a little of something that has been missing throughout the league, composure and finishing. The Deadly Drew is back. A little bid too late though.

Andy Goh 3
Falcons' 2 goal hero. A much improved performance compared to previous matches, possibly fired up by the come back. Scored a beauty with his second, drifting in with a shot. Keep it up.

Ben Weidemann 2

Riley Mahoney 2
Was penetrative with the ball but dwelt on it too long and lost the ball eventually. More composure on the final ball.

Michelle Prestidge 2

Allan Goh 2

Reagan Mahoney 2

Jason Kimball 2

Ztec Phoenix:
Gk:
Leo Nard 2
A bit rusty after his break. Not to be faulted on most of the goals as the defenders were either blocking his view or gone missing but much work to be done with his legs conceding a few low shots and nutmegs.

Defenders:
Brandon Pereira 2

Gim Hoong 3
Seems to be back to his back in the first period with his all round display upfront and behind but faded soon. Together with the other defenders. dropped too deep after the interval gifting Falcons dominance in the centre.

Yi Min 2

Ruth Chua 2

Wayne Tan 2

Attackers:
Amos Lim 3
The centre's tireless display was one of the rare positives of Griffins defeat. Kept on pushing and refused to surrender. A player to be mold for the future.

Dominic Ewe 2
Determine but lack lethal injection.

Jia Yen 2

Yuh Ting 2

Daniel Boey 2

Oon Ren 2

What was anticipated to be a tight match between these two teams turned out to be a one-sided game.

With the absence of several frequent supporters, the Dalat Indoor gym was particularly quieter than usual. The intensity of the game, however, replaced the deafeaning silence.
Anyone who watched the game could testify that there was an obvious shift of confidence from one team to the other - Being the driver to being the passenger and from being the passenger to being the driver.

Both teams started off really well with an obvious desire and confidence to win the game. Dalat first big mistake was to concede a free hit early in the game with Kerry Mahoney being sent off. That mistake somehow caused the Falcons to slack off a little, losing steam in momentum. Griffins took advantage of that as Dominic made a dribbling run down the left flank but was blocked. However, the lose ball wasn't cleared well enough and fell fatefully to the stick of Amos Lim who followed through and took a shot. There was no denying him at all. A really early goal for the Griffins.

That goal was a catalyst to Griffins surge of confidence in offence. Ten minutes into the game, they earned yet another free hit on the right flank in Falcons' half. Brandon showed no hesitation to take a direct clean hard slap shot at goal. Falcons' keeper barely moved as the ball flew past him into the top corner, taking a deflection on the way in.

It seemed as if it was all over for the Falcons as Griffins celebrated their second goal lead.

Just when you think the Falcons aren't soaring high enough, the wind came spurring them on to fight back. Drew who was left unmarked, dribbled across to the centre from the left with great speed releasing a fuming shot that went past the keeper on his far post.
Goal! That was a warning sign by the Falcons.
They ain't throwing in the towel just yet.

1-2.

True enough, the Falcons showed the Griffins the meaning of soaring as Drew deftly received a lop on the right side of the goal line who then dropped pass to Andy Goh. Shockingly, there weren't any defenders who attempted to block him. He had the all the time in the world to execute a hard wrist shot that obviously left Leo Nard furious with his defenders. He even took out his helmet in dismay.

That was the crucial point in the shift of confidence between the two teams.

In the dying few minutes of the first period, both teams were down with 4 outfield players. Drew tormented the Griffins' defense with his tireless runs. By then, it was obvious that Griffins were getting passive in their game play.

The first period ended with a 2-2 draw.
Back to square one for both teams.
Can Griffins handle the increasing pressure after losing a 2-0 lead? Or will they slip up and allow the Falcons to soar pass them?

The second half resumed with an odd choice of strategy by the Griffins. They played way too deep in their own half of what could be a strategic play or just plain mental let down. It seemed as if they were going for the counter attacks rather than pushing hard forward.
The Falcons, known for their speed and stamina, took advantage of that.

The Griffins played so deep that even the Falcons defensive line could push up right to the centre. Worst still, even Falcons' defender, Jared Williams, could have the amount of space to take several shots. Adding to the messy defending by Griffins, it was going to be a disastrous second period for them surely.

Ben Weidemann of Falcons made a great dribbling run down the right as Griffins' defender Brandon came hassling him but only to be left dumbfounded as Weidemann waltz passed him unleashing a weak shot that hit the post. Luck was on their side as the shot rebounded to Falcons' number 2, Reagan Mahoney, who struck it into the goal.

3-2 up for the Falcons!

It wasn't looking too good for the Griffins by then. Heads were down.

In spite of the discouraging scoreline, Griffins almost immediately reply back with a goal under a speedy counter attack, a shot was taken only to be blocked by Falcons' keeper and Daniel Boey of Griffins arrived a little too late for the rebound.

Things went from bad to worse for Griffins. A ball was deflected into Griffins' hot zone. Gim Hoong managed to chest the ball down but only to the feet of Drew who cleverly protected the ball with his body. He even managed to dribble the ball a little closer to the goal and then took a low shot that went through the already confidence-shaken legs of Leo Nard.

4-2.

Falcons didn't just want to win the game.
They want to win it bad, real bad.

Their attacking force remained relentless causing numerous problems to the Griffins. Griffins had to switch to plan B with Gim Hoong pushing forward instead of his usual defending position and it almost proved to be deadly as he made a pass to Amos who came running in with a first timer shot that went sky high. Good effort from both players. With Gim Hoong playing up front, Griffins showed more flamboyant movements in attack.

However, with Gim Hoong playing up front, the Griffins were lacking solid defenders at the back much to the advantage of Falcons. This was proven as Falcons' number 9, Andy Goh, received a pass from the left, dribbled pass a defender and then took a superb shot at goal that left Leo Nard diving for nothing as the ball passed him with great ease.

5-2.

It was downhill all the way after that as Drew increased the scoreline.
He received a pass in the centre, took his chance with a shot at goal that went pass the keeper's legs. Leo Nard definitely wasn't having the game of his life as he failed to stop the sixth goal.

6-2.

It wasn't an easy match for the Griffins and to suffer a painful defeat such as this, they will need to have loads of mental preparation for the upcoming match. Nonetheless, great effort on their part.

The Falcons were just too strong for them to contain. What separates this two teams is the fact that Falcons were definitely physically fitter. With the likes of Drew and Co. running around tirelessly around the court, you can't help but to slack off a little with fatigue kicking in. They showed a relentless spirit despite being down with 2 early goals.

Never say never, they proved it.

Dalat Falcons:
From defense to centre to forward, they were solid, especially physically. Their tireless runs killed the Griffins line of defense numerous times. Another noteworthy analysis is that they possessed a great mental strength. Trailing 2 goals behind, they proved that it was all about mind over matter.

Defensively, it was a superb display of composure once again by the two veterans of Falcons, Kerry Mahoney and Brian Weidemann. Both were literally the pillar in the defense and though the lack in speed, they compensate it with their size and experience. Moreover, they displayed a great sense of understanding between themselves in defense. As much as they defended, they also had an eye for goal. They attempted several tries. Great effort.

From centre to the attacking line, the Falcons were just a nuisance to the Griffins. As mentioned, what separates this two teams is the very fact that Dalat is physically fitter. It is a team filled with players who can not only run but who can run with great speed and with unlimited stamina. Having said that, this game saw that most of their forward were in tip-top form, especially Drew. His instinct in front of goal was deadly in this match compared to previous matches.

With a 6-2 win, you can't really complain much now, can you?
Great game and well deserved win for the Falcons.

MoM:
Drew Steiret.
It was a pick between Kerry and Drew.
Kerry has been by far the most consistent player but the star of the night was definitely Drew.

He finally came out of his shadow and stepped into the spotlight.
His work ethics was higher than ever as he charged for every ball, unsettling the Griffins which at times forced them into turnovers and with his well known stamina, he could've kept it going all night long!

Rediscovering his finishing touch, he rejuvenated Falcons spirit with the first goal, then a well controlled lob to assist the equaliser and together with his team mates, put another 4 to nail Griffins hopes to the coffin.

The Captain, announcing his return (a little too late) with a hattrick and assist to his name, was undisputed the Man of the Match.

Ztec Griffins:
Started off really positive but as the shift of confidence took place, their positive attitude was overpowered by negativity. Taking the lead 2-0 and then losing 6-2 is a very harsh and cruel way to end a match for any team but that's Floorball.
That's reality.

As mentioned, overall they started off well, very compose and confident both in attack and defense. Having scored 2 goals and leading a presumably comfortable scoreline, they could have played a little too confident which may have led to the first two really bad goals. Both goals were defenders error, leaving Falcons' forward way too open and unmarked. Even Leo Nard was furious with his defenders as he took of his helmet after the second goal went it.

Second period was tormenting for them. We are still not sure if its Griffins' coach decision to play defensive or just the players lack of confidence to push up high. If its the coach's decision to play his team deep in defense, it was a bad call. Dalat took every bit of advantage they could from that game play and it proved to be favour them as they cruised pass with a comfortable win. Then again, it could be the players lack of confidence that led to their extremely defensive play in the second half.

It's a painful defeat, one that may leave an indelible mark. They will need to muster every bit of courage and mental strength for their future games. Every match is a learning experience.
Losing is not everything.
But losing is everything if you lose without learning.
Keep your heads up, Griffins!

MoM:
For Griffins, it was an easier pick.
The first line was impressive and beaming with confidence in the first 10 minutes, leading with 2 goals.
Like his team mates, Amos Lim was hunting Falcons with all guns blazing, running around like a Ferrarri early on, pinning down Falcons who were having a slow start.

He was reward for his effort through a follow up for Dominic's loose ball and crafted a few opportunities for his team mates as well.

When, all crumble after the half, Amos kept on with his game of high presuring and fast counter attacks. Although it was rather fruitless, facing Falcons' defense along, lacking support from his team mate, his courage and determination deserves some acknowledgement.

Match Preview: Identically Challenged

Dalat Falcons vs Ztec Griffins

Date: 3rd March 2009 (Tuesday)
Face-off Time: 7.45pm
Venue: Dalat International School

Both teams are in the bottom half of the table with identical points overall, whoever wins this match will position themselves above the other.

Ah, can you smell the hunger to win?

Falcons who recently conceded a walk-over to Contact Bullets are now facing the consequence, dropping down to the bottom half while at the same time, giving Contact Bullets an extra 5 goal difference advantage. Moreover, the Falcons haven't had a good run this season. Losing in the match against Phoenix prior to the walk-over definitely have dampened the spirit of the Falcons in one way or another. Their task ahead seems like a steep climb uphill and knowing the Griffins, they sure won't let the Falcons flying around freely.

Griffins themselves are pretty much in the same boat. Having played 3 games, they only manage to come up with a win so far while losing the other two. Lady luck hasn't been on their side really. Overall in terms of gameplay, Griffins have been somewhat unfortunate for their lack of a good finishing. Generally, they do take shots at goal but somehow the ball just seemed a little bias towards the goal, stubbornly avoiding the net. Surely frustration must be knocking on each of the players' door.

Who will have the charisma to win this match?
It's hard to say really.

Dalat may seem like a decent contender but with their current form in the league, it's really hard to tell. Moreover, with a new keeper at goal, they have proven to be rather vulnerable at the back. Having said that, he (the keeper) has shown tremendous improvement. It's never easy tackling the role of a goalkeeper. Bravo! Notwithstanding the new keeper and the vulnerability of their goal, the Falcons do have a very strong and solid line of defense. Thus far, their veteran number 19, Kerry Mohoney, has proven that age is not a factor.

Griffins, on the other hand, haven't gotten their Midas touch to work. As mentioned earlier, their finishing is one of their main problems that needs to be rectified if they really want to get out of the bottom half. Good news is that Griffins will be glad to have the retun of their captain and first-choice keeper, Leo Nard. His presence is definitely vital for the team. With that in place, Amos, who played keeper in the previous match, can fall back into his former position, playing up front to get the goals running. Defensively, Griffins should be able to withhold the attacking force of the Falcons.

Key Player:
Dalat Falcons:
Kerry Mohoney has shown in every game that he played a pivotal role. Whether they win or lose, Kerry's ability to backboned his team, both in defense and attacking, is a crucial asset for his team. His experience has granted him the poise that he needs to anchor his team professionally.

Ztec Griffins:
The return of their captain will be the key link. Leo Nard's absence in their previous match against 300 was greatly missed by his team mates. Not only will he be guarding the two post that will determine the outcome of the match, but greater still is the task of commanding his team to play their hearts out before it is all too late.

Predictions:
Bendy:
Falcons is an unexpected guest in the bottom half as they were hailed as title contenders from the start of the league but a series of unfortunate events and some reshuffling in their squad have gotten to their disadvantage. Nothing much can be done about that I guess.

Griffins on the other hand, must be cursing their luck as well. The 2 games they lost were much down to luck and for the most part, their woeful finishing. Much credit for their effort but I guess practise really makes a difference.

Both teams are terribly torn apart by luck, who will be the less unlucky one this time around?

Well, rather than leaving it to uncertainty, we might as well look at how they can turn things around with their own hands!

Falcons, other than the goalie, they still have a solid team, blended with speed and experience. Drew and co. upfront is definitely raring to go after missing out against Bullets while Kerry and gang will be count upon to hold firm the last line of defense, protecting the rather vulnarable Daniel Kim.

Griffins will most definitely be happy to welcome back their Captain and goalie Leo Nard. The question is:
Can he maintain his form after missing a match? Or will he need time to gradually recharge for the upcoming match? We shall see.

On court, Gim Hoong and Amos Lim will be relieve to revert back in their position after some major reshuffling due to Leo Nard's absence. This time there will be no excuse of playing out of position as they need to perform in order to register a win against a wounded Falcon.

As for the outcome, I will be rooting for Griffin to win. Both have a strong first line, weak squad depth and pacey in attack. However, Griffins topped Falcons in the Goalie department and I foresee Falcons to concede some sloppy goals again. Plus if the main defenders are playing, they should be able to cope with Drew and Co.

The decider will be how long can the first timers last on court;
How both teams' substitutes will perform; and
Whose side lady luck will be this time.
All things go well, a slim win for Griffins.

Spritzer:
Dalat as a team will display better movement on court. With tireless runners at the forefront of the attacking line and a solid defensive line at the back, Falcons seem to be in good shape. However, with the come back of Griffins' keeper, Leo Nard, the Falcons will surely have a tough time cracking this guy down at goal.

Griffins will need to brush up on their finishing if they want to win. The advantage that they have is the fact that Falcons' goal is very Very shaky. They MUST take that achilles' heel to their advantage.

I'll go with Griffins bagging a win. Should be a very close and tight match though.

Jose:
I'm shocked at Bendy's prediction to go for a Griffins win. Seriously, is that possible?

My prediction is for Dalat Falcons to run away winners by at least 4 goals, if not more. Here is my take on this match, Dalat with the likes of Drew and Riley should cause Ztec Griffins loads of problems. Both teams have speedy forwards, but i just feel that the Dalat Falcons forwards are sharper and more lethal at goal compared to the forwards from Ztec Griffins.

Defensively, Dalat has 2 strong pilars in Kerry and Brian who are big, strong and experienced. While the Ztec Griffins forwards are no where near their height or size. I seriously cannot see how they will be able to get pass these defenders. Speed maybe, but the Griffins in my opinion is way 'new' to challenge these experience defenders. I don't see Dalat's defenders being troubled by the likes of Amos and co.

However, the only thing that Ztec Griffins have that Dalat Falcons don't, is an experience goalkeeper. Leo Nard vs Daniel Kim, interesting. Leo Nard (and Amos) has been very important for keeping the scores respectable for Griffins. I foresee Dalat constantly pressing Griffins to their own half. Probably Griffins hitting back with a few counter attacks trying to take advantage of some shaky goalkeeping.

All the best Leo Nard! It is going to be a busy night.

Bullets vs Falcons: The Walkover Interview with the Man Behind the Rink

Contact Bullets vs Dalat Falcon.
The game was never played.

Why?

To answer this question, we've managed to get hold of Dalat Falcon's Coach, Jason Selva, to give us some insights on what happened.
Find out more below:

BBF: Borak Borak Floorball
JS: Jason Selva - Dalat Falcons' Coach

BBF: We heard that you're conceding a walk-over in your upcoming match, is that true? Why?

JS: Yes, we are conceding a walk-over for the match between Dalat and Contact.

Dalat comes up with their school semester calendar right when we get back from the holidays. It's rather difficult for us to pre-plan games dates and PFA has done an excellent job scheduling all the Div 2 games.

Unfortunately, for us it just so happens that week is the beginning of our Missions Emphasis Program and all the Dalat teachers and students will be involved in that.

Contact Floorball Club very graciously tried to accommodate us by trying several alternative dates but it we couldn't work out the shortage of players for both teams.

After trying several times, we finally decided it was easier to concede the game and work hard at the rest of the games we had coming up.

BBF: Dalat has been noted from the start as one of the top teams to beat, how do you think this walk-over will affect your campaign in this league?

JS: Dalat has a great team and we've always tried to put together a team that can work together fairly well.

Due to the scheduling of the Division 1 and 2 games for the year in light of APAC it ha worked to Dalat's disadvantage.

All our players who are meant to be in the Div 1 league will not be around when June rolls around because they all leave for their respective countries for the summer vacations. So we've had to put them all in Div 2 for 2 years running which has been demoralizing, even though they made it through to Div 1 after the last PFA League.

So to balance the team out a little and make it more challenging, I put in a brand new goalkeeper. Our goalie has been playing as long as the 2009 Div 2 league has been going on for.

BBF: How will this affect the morale of your players?

JS: As for the effects of the walk-over, I think it's affected me more than it has the players. I seem to feel that I'm always at the losing end of things when it comes to fighting this battle for Dalat Floorball.

It will affect us in the long run because we have a brand new goalie but I also know that our Dalat players will do their best no matter what. So, it really doesn't matter now.

We'll play our best and give it our all and who knows what the outcome will be. Maybe we might still have a chance at the top positions.

BBF: If the game were to be played, who do you think would have won? And why?

JS: I think that if we had played we would have had a chance to win, but I say that cautiously because again it comes back to our goalie.

Our first game against Frontliners we had our full team playing and although we allowed 2 goals I think in the first half, we still came back and won the game.

However for our second game we were playing with a group of defenders as most of our forwards were away in Kuala Lumpur for a soccer tournament that weekend and we lost to ZTEC Phoenix 4-1. I must say that they did play an excellent game, very meticulous and persistent. So, I guess that's as vague an answer as it gets.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As it's BorakBorak protocol/tradition, our very own "experts" also generously contributed their 2 cents worth on the walkover and how it will affect the league as a whole:

Bendy:
What a waste. It was one of the more anticipated matches in my books as both are genuine medal contenders.

Both teams have strength and weakness to counter each other. Contact with shooters everywhere which I feel they would have gotten a few goals agains Dalat's inexperience goalie. But their physique will be much capitalised by the Dalat's attackers, they too will be able to power through some goals. It would have been a tight match.

Now, with the walkover, Bullets are getting away easy with 2 points and 5 clean goals, positioning them in second with a healty goal difference.

Phoenix is currently leading the pack and looking untouchable, second spot is now wide open and is up for grab. With Falcons facing relatively weaker opponents in their final two matches whereas 300 and Bullets still pending a match agianst the league leaders, it may boil down to internal goal differences between the 3 teams to decide who gets a medal. Interesting stuffs.

This is all on paper though, and anything can happen on court. Don't written off the others so soon as well, they might have a trick or two up their sleeves. Focus people!

Jose:
It is really sad that this match had to end as a walkover, because the players from Dalat could not make it on that particular Tuesday. And as a result of this walkover, the title race for the Division 2 crown is now wide open. For me personally, i think that the walkover between Contact vs Dalat has blew the top 3 spots up for grabs. The 3 horse race has now become a 4 horse race.

It is high time for all the 4 medal contenders (Ztec Phoenix, Contact Bullets, Frontliners 300 and Dalat Falcons) to get all fired up as we are coming to the end of the Div 2 season. Where these teams finish at the end of the season will all come down to these remaining fixtures. All 4 medal contenders cannot afford any slip-ups at such a crucial point of the season. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season unfolds. Best of luck people!

Player Rating: Ztec Phoenix vs Dalat Falcons

5 = world class
4 = superb
3 = good
2 = ok ok
1 = bad

Ztec Phoenix:
Gk:
Yung Ming 3
Finally the keeper has some work to do, numerous close range shots form Falcons were dealt with instinctive saves. Was rarely threaten by their long shots as well. Came close to conceding from two wicked deflections but other than that, a good game.

Defenders:
Jack Lee 2

Chern Harng 2
Opening the scoring from a fluke shot. Keeper's error but credit given for even trying to take a shot so far out. Was slightly uncertain in defending during the second, need to be more confident against Dalat's tough forwards.

Siu Keong 2

Attackers:

Adrian Koay 3
Capt was on the score sheet again, a superb solo effort and had a much more influential performance compared to the last. Was bossing the center with some good interceptions and counter attacking.

Teik Hong 3
Shift up to forward position and was raring to go. Fought for every ball up front and had several fruitless solo runs. Connected telepathically to Samuel Ong's cross, cleared and unmarked at least 3 times but lack the finishing as he only scored one. A very tenacious performance by the boy.

Samuel Ong 3
Playing like a typical winger, the forward bombarded down the flanks consistently. His crosses some how kept connecting with Teik Hong, like steel and magnet only for Teik Hong to squander the chances. And the only ball which Teik Hong did converted, the assist was not recorded, what a pity.

Calvindav 2

Wei Jin 2

Dalat Falcons:
Gk:
Daniel Kim 2
Lapse of concentration gifted Phoenix the first goal, but came back rather ok considering his inexperience and lack of basic. Pull of some decent saves. Not individually to blame for the other goals as they were more due to collective mistakes.

Defenders:
Michelle Prestidge 2
A tough, no nonsense defender. Made several crucial interceptions but concede a lot of fouls along the way which lead to free hit in dangerous areas.

Kerry Mahoney 3
Another solid game by the old guard, tough and uncompromising in halting Phoenix's forward runs. Also contributed well in attacking with some key passes up front and several long shots.

Brian Weidemann 2

Attackers:
Jared Williams 2

Andy Goh 2

Drew Steiert 3
The capt has worked his socks off, doing the work of two forwards but faded off slightly after the break. Still unable to rediscover his scoring touch as he came close on numerous occasions but failed to convert. 5 star for work rate though.

Allan Goh 2

Kyle Ladner 2
Capped a great first half performance with Dalat's only goal off the match. Creating havoc with his solo efforts but rarely look like scoring.

Riley Mahoney 3
A decent game for the forward who came close a few times in the second half with his hard pressing and solo runs but like his teammates, unable to put it pass the keeper.

Match Review: Legend in the Making

Ztec Phoenix vs Dalat Falcons
4-1(2-1, 2-0)

First Period:
08:25 Chern Hang
12:46 Teik Hong
16:24 Kyle Ladner ( Brian Weidemann )

Second Period:
25:10 Adrian Koay
25:54 Calvindav

Bench Penalties:
Ztec Phoenix 2mins x 2
Dalat Falcons 2mins x 1

The Big Boys strutted out their stuff on court last Saturday in what seemed to be the showdown of the league and at the end, only one proved to be more superior.

Both teams were without a full squad due to unforeseen circumstances and as such, we predicted a slow start in the game. However, Phoenix proved otherwise. Phoenix by far, displayed their best start in a match as compared to previous games. They ignited the first few minutes with hard body-checks and was surging forward confidently. Phoenix's Teik Hong managed to trigger the first shot of the game but was blocked by fellow Falcon, Kerry Mahoney. At the other end, Falcons' reciprocated with Drew winning a thrown ball by Yung Ming, and unleashed a volley that went inches wide the goal.

Although Phoenix showed tip-top form from the beginning, their defense however did not. Chern Hang fumbled the ball in the middle of their defensive zone against Falcons' Jared Williams who fired a shot that thankfully for Phoenix, went wide. Falcons released yet another shot by Brian Wiedemann from his own half that was palmed away effortlessly by Yung Ming.

Then came the freak goal by Phoenix. In a brief moment of lapse of concentration by Falcons' keeper, who was seen adjusting his goalpost or net, Chern Hang's long and seemingly harmless shot from the left just went rolling into the goal. Everybody, except the Phoenix, was left in confusion. Freak goal but a goal nonetheless.

Drew, as always, was the most energetic player out court. He covered almost every corner of the court - from forward dropping down to the centre and then right down to defense - notwithstanding his insane stamina, he was a little off form in terms of his "poacher" instinct. Kerry Mahoney's free hit who's shot went through the legs of the wall strolled across the centre of the court and conveniently fell on to Drew who bizzarrely missed the ball.

Phoenix's Teik Hong showed interest to be voted as MoM with his many penetrative runs in the heart of Falcons' defense and with his effort in taking shots at goal. Samuel Ong made a pass up front that caught Falcons' defense off guard. Teik Hong capitalized on that and managed to get a one on one situation against the keeper. Daniel, Falcons' keeper, showed that he was more superior. But the nightmare wasn't over for Falcons as the ball dangerously bounced back into the centre of their defense and was only relieved once Brian Wiedemann cleared the ball away.

Samuel and Teik Hong once again showed their hunger for a second goal advantage. Samuel made a spledid run down the left flank and made a cross to the middle and found Teik Hong umarked as Falcons defenders failed to fall back. Teik Hong made sure he scored this time in another one on one situation and he did.

2-0 up for the Phoenix.
Desperation for the Falcons, excitement for the Phoenix.

Another MoM contender was Phoenix's goalkeeper, Yung Ming, who showed incredible reflexes and superb agility guarding his goal. Kyle Ladner's deflected shot proved Yung Ming's ability as he instinctively saved the shot with sheer reaction. Again, he proved his reliability as he saved Drew's shot from the centre.

Falcons were getting desperate for a goal. Phoenix, on the other hand, was scrummaging for possession and pulling their socks up in defense. With these two teams tugging hard at both ends, the game began to built up with more agression and tension.

Falcons constant hassling in front of goal paid off. One of the Falcons took a shot which ricocheted against the rink behind Phoenix's goal and fell onto the stick of Kyle Ladner. Standing just few inches away in front of goal, there was no way he was going to miss it. Yung Ming was left stranded.

2-1.
The Eagles were now hopeful, the Phoenix a little fearful.
And with that, the first period ended with Phoenix still clinching onto a slim lead.
Can the Falcons bounce back in the second period?

They definitely showed signs of that happening as the second period kicked off with Drew slapping in a shot that was saved by Yung Ming and another one by Kyle Ladner that went just wide across the right post. Allan Goh of Falcons also took a shot that was deflected. It bounced up and painfully striked against the post. Just when you think lightning doesn't strike twice, Yung Ming's throw was intercepted by Falcon's forward who took a shot on the volley that went straight to the post, AGAIN! Within the span of just few seconds, Falcons hit the post twice!
Phoenix was lucky,
Falcon wasn't.
A nervy start from the Phoenix but a promising display by the Falcons.

PFL clearly revealed players lack of understanding of the rules and regulations. Chern Hang, who failed to block one of Dalat's Falcons' forward, loses his stick in the process. Instead of picking up his stick first, he went straight to the ball and kicked it away rewarding himself with a 2 minutes bench penalty. He was the second Ztec player to be sent off for such an offense.

It was obvious that Phoenix shifted into defensive mode, clearing off incoming shots and making sure Falcons' forwards were taken out. As defensive as they were, they still showed some jittery moments with Chern Hang continuously making crucial defensive mistakes. However, what made them a better team in this match was their ability to capitalize on every given opportunity in front of goal.

5 minutes into the second period, Drew loses the ball up front and fell onto Teik Hong, who once again made a solo run forward. He managed to make a drop pass to Calvindav who took a long shot that went wide. Then, came the goal of the match, Adrian who picked up the ball on the right side, dribbled past Falcons' defender into the middle and then unleashed a shot. There was no stopping him.

Goal! Superb solo effort by Adrian who has helped him team cruised past with a 3-1 lead. More bad news for the Falcons.

By now, the Phoenix were soaring high and their 4th goal followed soon after. The Falcons gave away a free hit to the Phoenix for a high stick offense. Calvindav took the free hit on the left side of court, giving them a comfortable 4-1 lead. Another goal for the Phoenix in the 5th minute of the second period.

Despite being down with 3 goals, the Falcons did not display a deterred spirit. Riley Mahoney was still lively up front, hunting down for every ball, dribbling behind Phoenix's goal and all around. He only lacks the urgency to release a pass or a shot. Nonetheless, great effort from this young lad. His counterpart, Drew Steiert, also showed no signs of fatigue. Drew was more quick to release shots but he just wasn't decisive enough to finish it.

A free hit was given to Falcons just outside Phoenix's crease in front of goal for another high stick offense. Falcon's shot almost found its way into the net only to be guarded by the saving hands of Yung Ming.

Samuel and Teik Hong seemed to be the deadliest duo in this match. Their numerous counter attacking partnership showed great potential. Samuel's quick feet got him to a loose ball who manages to deliver a pass to Teik Hong who's shot was blocked.Interesting pair to watch.

The match continued with Falcons' relentless effort up front. Shots after shots were taken but they just couldn't convert it into goals. Credit must be given to the Phoenix as well for defending well. At the end of the day, only one proved to be more superior than the other.

The mystical Phoenix showed why they are legendary in their own rights, bagging a 4-1 win this time around. For the Falcons, fret not. It's not over yet. After all, they say that legends are made up.

Ztec Phoenix:
Winning this game has now granted them the top spot in the league. This game is by far their best game. Considering how they kicked off in their previous matches, this time they showed a burning heart to win from the start. Oddly, they started the first period with "omph" but then started off the second period with lapse of concentration in their defense. Weird.

Defensively, they can be very erratic. At times they may seem confident taking any offensive line down but when they lack concentration, they can cause a mess in front of goal. Also, most of their players are still not aware of important floorball rules, which has contributed to several bench penalties on their part. They were lucky this time as the Falcons weren't in their best form. They have good strong defenders but these advantages need to be used in its most optimum way.

In attacking, the Phoenix were still lacking incisive finishing in the final third as they squarderd twice the amount of chances before putting in four. They also lacking build up in attack, other than the goal from Teik Hong who came from a build up, the others came a mistake, a solo effort and a set piece. But then again, it has become a trend in Div 2 whereby the fastest wins the match and with their closest rival out of the picture, their physical advantage will give them the luxury to miss those chances as long as they put in enough to win. The leader is for their's to lose.

MoM:
Yung Ming, the goalkeeper. He was the only consistent player on court for Phoenix. Having an erratic line of defense, it wasn't easy for him to trust his players. Thus, it was his instinct that made sure he was up to mark. Though most of the time Falcons' shots were off target, but when it came down to real business, he proved to be at his best. Numerous quick natural reflexes saves that helped his team win this match.

Dalat Falcons:
Losing this game is a heartbreaker. Last year's champion is now being tested. Truth be told, they weren't at their most deadliest form.

Their forwards constant annoyance in the face of Phoenix's defenders were great and critical effort. Their instinctive "final touch" just wasn't there in this game. So many shots were taken, mostly went wide, either that or were saved by Yung Ming. Drew and Mahoney's energetic runs up front, although lacking the proper finishing, proved to be a vital asset.

Defensively, Falcons' were much more consistent as compared to Phoenix. Dalat19, Kerry Mahoney commanded his line well. It was unfortunate that they let in 4 goals in this match. Their advantage in defense is the experience and composure of their senior defenders. Their downfall however would be their lack of speed. Most of the goals conceded came from a counter attack in which their defensive line were to slow to retreat and stand on guard.

MoM:
Kerry Mahoney. The veteran held frim in defence, was strong and decisive in halting Phoenix's forays. He proved to be a hard sheild to break, as the Phoenix forwards runs was constantly broken down as them rammed into Kerry. He provided the much needed confidence by the Falcon's forward to fire all cylinders up front knowing he'll provided the rear guard. However, the constant rampaging up front left the defence helpless when the forwards failed to track back as Phoenix countered in numbers, scoring a few in the process. 4 goals conceded but a good game nevertheless.

Match Preview: The Big Boys Game

Ztec Phoenix vs Dalat Falcons

Date: 14th Feb 2009 (Saturday)
Face-off Time: 11.00am
Venue: Dalat International School

The Big Boys game.
Both teams consist mainly by men (though Falcons have a few female players) and with a win a piece, it will be a warzone out there.

Phoenix proved that their fully testosterone driven team is one that is dangerous. Claiming their first win against fellow club mates -- Griffins -- in their opening match, they will be thirsting for another cup of victory this time. And now, it won't be as easy.

Based on previous match record, Phoenix started off poorly, almost lacklustre. However, their performace progresses along the way, which is a good thing. They learn to catch the flow of the game and the rhythm once they feel comfortable with the gameplay and this is when they are most formidable.

The Falcons, also grabbing a comfortable win against 300 in their opening match, will be aiming to bring down Phoenix. Having a good start in the league, confidence is still floating in the air for them. An overall agressive team, both in defense and offense, it will be a tough fight. Considered as the best in the league, there must surely be an achilles heel somewhere. Their defensive line will probably be their biggest problem. Phoenix must capitalize on this if they want to come out top.

Both teams are known for their physical play and it will be interesting to see how they match up against each other. Falcons probably have slightly more "bigger" size players as compared to Phoenix. Dalat's gameplay should probably be a little more organized, they should be able to tame the Phoenix. Having said that, Phoenix has been regarded as the up and rising team in the league. With nothing to lose on their end, they will definitely make sure the Falcons are on their toes.

The Big Boys game..... er... and a few ladies....

Key Player:
Ztec Phoenix:
Yung Ming with his experience is expected to keep his team in the game. This is one big game for a goalie and with the Falcons having some quick and tricky forwards, he will have to be alert at all times throughout the match. Definately has the confidence to play in big games like this as he as lots of experience playing in big games of various sports.

Dalat Falcons:
Drew Steiert, the point leader from last years Division 2 will be the key player to watch out for in this match. He was anonymous in the first outing between Frontliners 300, however our pundits hope to see Drew pressuring high and closing down the spaces. And we a shaky Dalat defence, Drew and his attacking teamates better be on tip top form to score as many goals possible to overcome Ztec Phoenix. This is because we are predicting Dalat Falcons to be leaking in plenty of goals in this game.

Predictions:
Bendy:
I hope Phoenix is all warmed up and raring to go after strugglinh to over come their club mates last week, because this time, it's the mightly Falcons in the way.

A 5 goal winning margin against 300 was an under par performance in my books for the Falcons, with their array of talents up front, they should be up by double figures. They too, like their opponents, are still adjusting their barrels and alignments.

Falcons's back line might be their biggest draw back, with an inexperience goalie, Falcons might find a win hard to come by if they down nick in some as well.

The most anticipated game in my calender as both are genuine medal contenders. Expecting goals from both side, but still a win to Falcons. A small margin perhaps. Phoenix might be up for an upset if they manage to fine tune their finishing first.

Jose:
Definately the biggest game in Division 2 this season. I am really looking forward to this showdown between 2 of the better teams in Division 2. It should be a tight match as both teams have their respective strengths and weaknesses.

Both Ztec Phoenix and Dalat Falcons better improve their finishing in the final third, if they are going to win this match. I forsee a quick game between both these sides with lots of counter attacks as both teams have fast players. These 2 teams have performed below their level in their first match of the season and it would be high time for both these 'sleeping giants' to wake up and start playing some proper floorball.

My prediction will be for Ztec Phoenix to win this game by more than 2 goals. I think both sides are pretty equal in strength in all departments except for the goalies. Yung Ming will be expected to keep his side in the game and hopefully their forwards can deliver the goals for the team. And with Falcons having a less experienced goalie in goal, hopefully the forwards from Ztec will take this opportunity to take more shots at goal (Just like what Frontliners 300 did).

After watching all the teams play, I think that Ztec Phoenix should be firm favourites to emerge champions for Division 2 this season.

Spritzer:
You put two title contenders into the ring and you'll get a whole lot of action. Expect to see a high-intensity game with roaring testosterones.
For Dalat, they will be setting their eyes to maintain their spot at the top while Phoenix's mission will be to bring the Eagle down.
I think the decisive element of the game will be the keepers.
With both teams having pretty solid field players, physically especially, it will be up to the keeper's to decide the game.
And by saying that, I'll go with Phoenix for the win.
With Yung Ming in goal, it will be a tough wall to penetrate for the Falcons.

Mainly a spectator throughout the match. Little to do. His inexperience was well exposed by conceding 2 long shots from half court. More training Kim.

Kyle Ladner 2

19 Kerry Mahoney 3
The veteran defender so ever solid at the back, neutralising every threat coming his way.

Reagan Mahoney 3
Falcon's hero in the 1st period. A talent kid with huge potential. Definitely one to watch.

Drew Steiert 2
Anonymously throughout the 1st, sent off in the 2nd and then scored 1. Overall, an under-par performance by the 08's Point Leader. Hope to see more of him.

Riley Mahoney 3
Also a brace for another Mahoney. Decent game.

Vivian Lee (did not play enough to be rated)

It was sceduled to be an easy take-off for the Falcons with their experience squad, a touch and go, but like the Battle of Thermopylae, 300 refused to go down without a fight.

The match started off with Frontliners playing in a very defensive 2-2-1 formation, while Dalat Falcons played the basic 2-1-2. Falcons were pressing high and as expected, they scored the first goal in the early minutes regardless of 300's deep defending. Some poor man-marking by 300 granted Reagan a shot between the defenders. The ball came rolling into the goal eventhough the keeper manage to get a touch on it.

The second followed soon after. Reagan, unmarked, came roaming out from behind the posts to the surprise of the defenders and before they know it, he buried his second goal , squeezing pass the near post unassisted, leaving the helpless Soon Khai wondering where is his defenders.

Just when we thought that the game was over, Mekanath, who was Spartans (Frontliners Div 1 Team) top scorer came up with a superb shot from the left side of the court. A quick and cheeky fake got him past his marker and then dispatching a quick wrist shot towards Dalat's inexperienced goalie Danial Kim, who was left stranded as the ball flew passed him. The crowd roared, celebrating the very impressive goal coming from the underdogs. Despite Falcon's consistent press, lightning was siding 300 as it struck twice for them. Micheal Cheah equalised from half court with a drag shot which again flew pass the goalie without him flinching an inch.

Both teams enter the break with a goal a piece.Total unexpected scoreline.

Into the 2nd period, the Falcons, eyeing for a win, forechecked even higher, pinning the rather unadventurous 300 in their own half. Their effort seems to back fired as their skipper, Drew Steiert, was sent off for incorrect distance as he tried to block the keeper from a quick throw.

However, it proved to be the turning point of the match. The Falcons, regardless of the sending, of remained agressive and soon reaped its rewards. 300 succumbing to the constant hustling of the Falcons, committed numerous mistakes led to goals. Kevin Phyee scored with the Falcons down to 4 in a power-play situation. Drew redeemed himself with Falcon's 4th.

Soon Khai numerous heroic saves were in vain as the Falcons scoring spree seemed unstoppable. Riley Mahoney bagged a brace. 300 defensive efforts to keep the scoreline reasonable meant that their forward was left without any support and rarely threathened Daniel's goal other than some odd long shots.

300 conceded an own goal by Michael Cheah, who was ever so present in 300's defensive duties, deflecting the ball into the goal without him realising. Final score, 7-2. Although most predicted a bigger scoreline between the two teams, 300's tenacious defending and valiant spirit proved to be a stumbling block for the Falcon's. The result was no more than what both team deserves.

Dalat Falcons:
Both teams came up with surprises in their team roster but Dalat was by far the worst. Only half of last years Div 2 team were retained.

The understrength team struggled in the first period with an under-par performance and deservingly went into the break with a stunning comeback by 300. Their deadliest forward, Drew (2008 Div 2 Point Leader), was anonymous in the first period.

The 2nd period saw an even more intensive and effective high forechecking, forcing 300's already worn out legs to commit errors. Finally, 300's seemingly impenetrable defense were torn apart as Falcons' forwards came striking in the goals.

Their defensive line was marshalled well and were rarely threathened. 300 was busy ensuring damage control. Other than the erratic solo counter attacks by 300, the defenders and goalie were pretty much spectators of the match.

A deserved win, but not without a fight by the 300. Expecting them to fire all cylinders as they regain their form in attack in coming matches. Defense should be decent with Kerry Mahoney marshaling it but Daniel's post will need adequate cover as it proved to be their weakest link. The team roster suggests that they might find it hard to dominate like last year.

MoM:
Reagan Mohoney. The 2 goals hero was lively throughout the court and took the stage on the day when their lethal forwards went missing.

The boy has been around for a while now although with inconsistent appearances. A young and talented athlete, hope to see him pop in more goals as the league progresses. If the others can't find their "golden blade" in time, he may well be Falcons beacon of light.

Frontliners 300:

A great effort by Frontliners 300, a respectable performance. Especially in the 1st period where they defended every ball tirelessly and chased every ball forward agressively that kept Falcon's defenders on their toes. Stunned Falcons and everyone with a superb comeback from 2 goals down.

Partially contributed by inexperience goalkeeping and a few unexpected inclusions in Falcons' roster, they still a earned the well deserved draw in the first period.

Unfortunately, it was still not enough as the Mighty Falcons soared pass them with ease after the break. Falcons came in with more aggresion which 300 could not match due as fatigue started to kick in. Defended courageously but sloppy at the same time.

On a brighter note, Frontliners will definitely be able to do better in the coming Div 2 games. There is potential in this team what not with the additional fire power from Michael and Mekanath. With the commanding role of Michael in the centre and the pacey goal poacher Mekannath in the attack, they could spring up more surprises in upcoming matches. The league is DEFINITELY getting more interesting.

MoM:
Michael Cheah. His tireless performance was the highlight of the match. Outshining goalie Soon Khai's heroic saves and Mekanath's speeding attacking runs. The scoreline was definitely kept by Soon Khai's solid form but much credit should be given to the boy for his incisive interception and decisive blocking.

Possesing decent ball control and shots, in time, he will be part of 300's deadly attacking forces, proven enough by his equalising goal in the first period. Expecting more points from this rookie.

Match Preview: Manchester United vs Selangor FC?

Dalat Falcons vs Frontliners 300

Date: 31st January 2009 (Saturday)
Face-off Time: 11am
Venue: Dalat International School

If it is a football match, it would be like Manchester United playing against Selangor FC.

Truth be told, that’s how it is in the upcoming match between the soaring Falcons and the mighty 300. Although on paper, it may seem like Dalat Falcons are the “freshies” while Frontliners 300 (previously known as Frontliners Trojan in PFL 08’) are the more “experienced” team but in reality, it’s the total opposite when you place both team side by side on court.

Dalat Falcon comprises mainly by players from last year’s Division 2 champion, Dalat Eagles, players both young and old. No doubt they will definitely be high in confidence. The Frontliners 300, though it may be their second outing in PFL, are made up of mainly newly recruited players. Lacking in experience may be one of their biggest disadvantages, but what separates them even more from the Falcons is the physique of their players. Honestly, the 300 ain’t gonna be lookin’ anywhere close to the real Spartans on court.

Expect a heavily one-sided game. For Dalat, it will be pretty much a breeze through. Though 300 may be the obvious underdog amongst of the two, it will still be interesting to see how they cope with the match both physically and mentally. 300 will definitely be doing most of the defending. Their defenders really have to be on their toes if they want to keep the scoreline "decent" by the end of the match. It’s really quite unfortunate for 300 to kick-start their PFL outing this year facing a giant team like the Falcons.
Then again, the ball is round. A
nything can happen

Key Players:
Dalat Falcons:
Who else but that "Energizer battery imported all the way from Canada - Drew Steiert. Not only is his seemingly limitless stamina a bonus, but his speed will also be a threat to be reckon with. The Falcons will definitely be banking on this guy to get the goals coming.

Frontliners 300:
No matter how good a team may be but if they can't put the ball at the back of the net, it's all for nothing. That's where Frontliners 300 key player, Soon Khai, the goalkeeper, comes in. He's been donning the keeper's uit for only about 6 months now but has improved tremendously since. Although this will be his first major competition yet, he has showed great potential to shine as a keeper in PFL 09'.

Predictions:
Bendy:
A trashing . No chance for the brave 300 against the 10,000 strong Falcons, definitely a no fight no matter how you look on it. On paper, Falcons are overwhelming favourites compared to 300 who are undergoing transition. But games are not won on paper, and it will be up to 300 to upset the odds. With an unproven goalie as well, it could be one and only the Achilles Tendon that 300 can mount an upset on. Provided they can get out from their own zone and do some attacking of course.

Jose:
Men vs Boys. This match is going to be so one sided that it might not be even worth watching. Match secretariats get ready to be busy for this one! The Frontliners coach will have to get ready a superb 'speech' during the period break to motivate the players to continue playing on with their heads held high, despite whatever the scoreline may be. I'm predicting this game to be like the one which Frontliners played Dalat last year in the Penang League 2008. 17-0 again maybe? Hopefully less I hope. Anything less than 12-0 is a good scoreline for Frontliners.

Spritzer:
It’s a pretty obvious win for the Falcons. They will be the pace setter for the entire game considering the fact that they have better players with experience and physical advantage. Expect a lot of attacking play from the Falcons while the 300 stand on guard, defending as long as their feet can take them. In terms of scoreline, I’m expecting a 2 digit cruise for the Falcons. For the 300, if they can score even a single goal, it will be something to be applauded for.

Team Preview: Dalat Falcons

Dalat Falcons (Dalat Floorball)

Last Season: N/A. First timer.

Last year Dalat won Div 2, so they got promoted to Div 1 this season. This year they are planning to send in two teams. Common sense assumption will tell you that this team will be full of new and young fellas from Dalat right? Wrong!!! Don't be fooled, this is the exact same team (Dalat Eagles) that won Div 2 last year. Why are they doing this? Don't ask us, we don't have the slightest idea.

The reigning Div 2 champions still stuck in Div 2? What the crap! Bad news for all la. Made up of old and young from Dalat International School, they are big, they are strong, and they are tough. If the norm stays, the older guys will play as defenders, (rock solid) and the young guns will cover the court as forwards.

No team in Div 2 can match their brute force, and therefore are hot hot hot favourites to defend thier crown with reasonable ease. The only possible weakness is the clumsiness and relatively slow defense where pacey forwards can take advantage of, if they managed to squeze themselves through in the first place!

Key Player:
Drew Steiert. Fast, strong and tireless. Thats what you get when you have a triathlone champion as your team's forward. Last year's Div 2 Point Leader should be unstoppable again, most probably will top the point chart by a mile. It is just a pity we don't get to see him compete at a higher level in Div 1.

Rising Rookie:
N/A. Not that we can think of. All old timers la, just that you don't see them often in the Floorball scene.

Prediction:
Bendy:
1st. 99% confirm. No horse run!! Even last year's full force Ztec with the likes of Ter Min, Jo-wyee & co. crumbled into defeats in both legs. This year? None is even half the strength of Ztec. They should breeze through all games at ease, with two eyes closed!!

Jose:
Champions again! This team should be able to win this division without even having to go full force. The only threat I see that might prevent them from winning a back to back title would be Ztec Phoenix. However, I sincerely hope that they won't do a "17-0" again as it defeats the purpose of having a Division 2 for the newer teams to contest in.
